An expressive Pinot Noir, defined by purity, tension and line.
Vineyard:
Hailing from the biogro certified Grava vineyard in Martinborough, the vines are grown on the terraces of the Ruamahanga river providing alluvial deposits making silt loam soils.
Vintage:
The 2025 vintage had a challenging start with cool weather in December and January was followed by a long, warm, and dry autumn, which was critical for ripening.
Settled weather during harvest produced healthy, clean fruit with concentrated flavours and high natural acidity, setting up for very good, potentially long-lived wines.
Winemaking:
100% Abel clone was hand picked and destemmed to fermenter. Whole berries were inoculated with a pied de cuve (vineyard yeast starter) providing a strong natural fermentation. Gentle cap management and gentle pressing maintained a controlled level of extraction resulting in a pretty and focused wine. The wine then rested in seasoned French oak until it was ready to be bottled with a small addition of sulphur.
Tasting:
Perfumed with cherry, hibiscus and ripe redcurrant, elegant and aromatic. Supple yet structured, with chalky phenolics and fine tannins shaping the palate. Bright natural acidity and blood orange notes bring a saline, mineral edge, carrying through to a fresh, fruit-laced finish.
Analysis:
pH 3.85, T/A 5.85g/L, Alcohol 13%
